Mariah Carey recently shared that she’s grieving the loss of her mom, Patricia, and sister, Alison, after they died on the same day.

“Mariah said on Monday, August 26, ‘Losing my mother this past weekend has broken my heart’ in a statement to People.”

“Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” she added.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Mariah continues in her statement. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she said.

Mariah Carey didn’t add any further details regarding her mom and sister’s death. Patricia Carery was 87 years old, while Alison Carey was 63.

Patricia previously married Alfred Roy Carrey. She was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach before the couple had Mariah, Alison, and son, Morgan. Patricia and Alfred later divorced when Mariah Carey was three years old.

Meanwhile, Alison’s two sons, Shawn and Michael, survive her.

Mariach Carey was open about her rocky relationship with her family in her 2020 memoir, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey.’ In the book, the singer revealed her complicated relationship with her mother.

“I had to stop allowing [my family] to hurt me. It has been helpful. I have no doubt it is emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact with my [siblings],” Mariah wrote.

“The situation with Pat, on the other hand, is more complicated. I have reserved some room in my heart and life to hold her — but with boundaries. Creating boundaries with the woman who gave birth to me is not easy — it is a work in progress.”

In her memoir, Mariah reflected on her strained relationship with her siblings. Although they had a rough childhood, she’s still open to reconciling with them.

“I have forgiveness in my heart, and so I forgive them, but I am not trying to invite anybody to come hang out over here,” Mariah Carey previously said in an interview with Vulture in August 2020.

“I think they’re very broken, and I feel sad for them,” she added.
