Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien: Romulus’ went back to basics and brought a sense of horror back into the ‘Alien’ franchise.

Actress Cailee Spaeny admitted during behind-the-scenes that the film is dark and scary because how it doesn’t follow normal film formulas. The latest installment in the Alien franchise focuses back on the bleak and dark setting with a mix of claustrophobia. The elements that made the current, as well as the very first film impactful in the first place.

“Oh, it was always really sad when someone died, you know. Because we shot it chronologically. I think we were all getting really attached to each other,” Spaeny said. “So, whenever a death came up, it sort of was a very emotional day.”

Cailee Spaeny plays Rain Carradine, the protagonist and the ‘successor’ to Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Director Fede Alvarez succeeded in delivering fear out of ‘Alien: Romulus’ while keeping it fresh and new to the audience.

The film includes many nods and winks as a tribute to the original 1979 release. It serves as a standalone ‘interquel,’ a story that takes place between two previously released films.

Moreover, critics also praise how ‘Alien: Romulus’ successfully made the titular antagonists, the Xenomorphs, scary and impactful to today’s audiences. The Xenomorphs have long been a cultural icon in cinema history, but have lost their impact over time. Alvarez manages to make them terrifying again thanks to his approach and knowledge of the franchise.

“When it comes to the xenomorph, when you have those face-to-face encounters, you know, there’s just nothing that beats the practical,” Mr. Alvarez said.

The story of ‘Alien: Romulus’ revolves around a group of young space colonists scavenging a derelict space station. Along the way, they encounter the titular ‘aliens’ and do everything necessary to survive the onslaught.

‘Alien: Romulus’ release date was on August 16, 2024, and is available in cinemas.
