Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock, the Academy, and home viewers the day after slapping incident on the stage at the 94th Academy Awards, claiming he was “out of line” and that his actions were “not indicative of the guy he aspire to be.”

Smith shocked the live crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 27) when he came on stage and slapped Rock in the face with an open hand during the ceremony.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” said Smith.

“My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” his statement continued.

Smith also publicly apologized to the film academy, producers of the telecast, attendees, viewers and the Williams family. In a turn of events, the actor was also recognized by the Academy for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena, as best actor.

Although Rock has yet to formally accept the apology, a source said that Rock “had no idea” Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia.

According to a source close to Rock, the comedian and Smith have yet to speak about the event because he walked directly home after the ceremony.

Earlier Monday, the film academy stated: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct, and California law.”

The academy issued a statement condemning violence after the program on Sunday night. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the event on Sunday but said it will not pursue an investigation since the person involved refused to file a police report.

Smith’s actions have led to a debate in Hollywood and on social media, with several celebrities, critics, and public officials. – WhatALife!
