SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — TWICE’s Chaeyoung issued an apology on Tuesday (March 21) after posting a photo on her Instagram account in which she is seen wearing a T-shirt featuring a swastika.

The 23-year-old K-pop star shared a picture of herself wearing a shirt with a graphic of a 1970s picture of Sid Vicious, the bassist of the British punk rock band Sex Pistols, wearing a T-shirt with a swastika on it.

The swastika was a symbol used by the German Nazi party and was made the centerpiece of the Nazi flag by Adolf Hitler. The symbol is widely associated with the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime, including the Holocaust and other crimes against humanity.

Additionally, the swastika is widely regarded as a symbol of hate and is banned in many countries due to various meanings and interpretations in different cultures.

Chaeyoung’s apology, which was written in both English and Korean, stated that she did not recognize the meaning of the tilted swastika in the T-shirt, she wore and apologized for not thoroughly reviewing it before posting the photo. She expressed regret for causing concern and promised to pay absolute attention in the future to prevent any similar situations from happening again.

“I didn’t correctly recognize the meaning of the tilted swastika in the t-shirt I wore,” the star wrote in a statement posted to Instagram.

“I deeply apologize for not thoroughly reviewing it, causing concern. I will pay absolute attention in the future to prevent any situation similar from happening again. Sincerely apologize again,” Chaeyoung added.
