MANILA, PHILIPPINES — According to Telecommunications Connectivity Inc. (TCI), mobile number portability (MNP) increased by up to 28 percent in January due to mandatory SIM card registration.

Since the start of SIM card registration, TCI has seen a double-digit increase in MNP – a global telco practice that allows users to keep their numbers despite switching networks or changing their subscription from postpaid to prepaid and vice versa without fees.

“We can only attribute this spike in MNP to the intention of mobile users to keep their number, even as they make the move to the subscription or network they wish to permanently register under their name under the SIM Registration Law,” TCI General Manager Melanie Arsua-Manuel said in a press release.

“This is how the convenience of MNP and the protection provided by SIM registration, complement and reinforce each other,” she added.

Back in December, TCI reported a 26 percent increase in MNP.

“We believe that SIM registration will help ensure a more stable and secure information and communications technology environment for Filipinos and provide online safety from scammers, threats and fraudulent elements,” said Ms. Arsua-Manuel.

“Now that your SIM card has become attached to your identity, you can also choose to have the subscription and network provider who will be best for your needs through MNP,” she concluded.

TCI was formed as a joint venture among DITO Telecommunity, Globe Telecom Inc. and Smart Communications in 2021 to facilitate MNP.

As of 11:59 pm on February 14, 2023, a total of 32,673,146 SIM cards, or 19.34 percent of the 168 million subscribers, have been registered. The deadline for registration is on April 26, 2023. Failure to register will result in immediate SIM card deactivation.
