CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Thousands of Kagay-anons gathered along the scenic Rio de Oro Boulevard on August 6 to officially kick off Higalaay Festival 2026.
Carrying this year’s theme, “Our Gift. Our Pride. Our Guide,” the City of Golden Friendship launched a packed month-long celebration featuring over 50 official fiesta events, such as street dancing competition, festival half marathon, festival market and more!
Faith, Culture, and Star Power
The grand launch opened with a Holy Mass, followed by high-energy crowd games hosted by Tina Ryan for the TNT Activation.
Local performers then took the stage, honoring Mindanao’s rich heritage through ethnic dance numbers and live music.
Key city leaders, including Vice Mayor Jocelyn B. Rodriguez and Higalaay Festival 2026 Co-Chairperson Councilor Jayleen Mercedes ‘Girlie’ Balaba, welcomed guests before debuting the festival’s official 2026 promotional video and theme song.
In a surprise twist, city officials (led by Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ A. Uy) joined local beauty queens and dancers on stage for a live performance of the new festival dance craze.
Pop star Darren Espanto further elevated the night’s energy, serenading the crowd with hit renditions like “Dying Inside.”
A Symbol of Unity and Friendship
The highlight of the evening came as city leaders unveiled the official ceremonial symbol: two hands joined together, embodying the spirit of higalaay (friendship) and unity.
Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ A. Uy shared his thoughts on the upcoming fiesta explaining that unity makes anything achievable in CDO. In this city, people don’t just meet, they build lasting friendships.
The Higalaay Festival 2026 launch wrapped up with a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the night sky over Rio de Oro Boulevard, signaling the start of CDO’s biggest month of the year.
