MANILA, PHILIPPINES — After a 65-58 quarterfinal victory over Thai opponent Suriya Suanasing at Ha Dong Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam, Efren “Bata” Reyes is guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the 31st SEA Games 2022 carom tournament.

The semifinal will be held on Wednesday, while the final will be held on Thursday.

Reyes trimmed Suanasingh’s deficit to ten points after ending the interval with a 24-39 deficit.

He rallied to cut the margin to single digits when Suanasingh missed the shot with the score at 31-46, and ended the run with a miscue, 40-46.

He cut the deficit to 5 (47-42) after a few turns, outscoring Suanasingh to move away with the lead after leveling the series at 51-all, and was greeted with a tremendous ovation as he earned victory.

Reyes, who has won many medals in the biennial showpiece, including two golds in Jakarta in 1987, took bronze in the same event in Manila in 2019.

In another category, Rubilen Amit of India is inching closer to defending her championship in women’s 9-ball pool singles after defeating Xuan Van Bui of Vietnam.

Carlo Biado and Johann Chua also advanced to the men’s 9-ball pool semifinals after victories over Myanmar’s Thaw Zin Htet and Vietnam’s Thanh Kien Dang, respectively. – WhatALife!
